The pacific coast of Colombia is wild and pristine. Hidden bays and steep coast line, combined with harsh weather, rough seas, and the unstable social context make it one of the most inaccessible places on earth.

colombian fisherman in the chocó sorting fish from his net

Fishermen catch all sorts of fish species in their nets. Some, of a higher commercial value like tuna, will be sold to commercial fisheries and will be exported towards Colombia’s main cities. Here, a “bonito” fish, of no commercial value, will end up on the family table in a few hours and make up an affordable meal for the whole family.

colombian fishermen transporting fish back home after a fruitful night at sea

Once back at the beach, work’s not done. The fish has to be unloaded, sorted by species, and gutted. The nets also have to be cleaned and stored, ready to be used the next occasion. However, on Easter, fishermen take a mandatory break, as they believe it’s bad luck to go out to sea on this holy occasion!
